Brethren’s Cheese Bread 2 c. all-purpose flour 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tbs. sugar 1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 c. butter, cut into 4 parts 1 c. shredded sharp cheddar cheese 1 tbs. grated onion 1 1/2 tsp. dried dill weed 3/4 c. milk 1 egg, slightly beaten Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 9x5x3-inch loaf pan. Sift flour with baking powder, sugar, and salt into a large bowl. With a pastry blender or 2 knives, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in cheese, onion, and dill weed. Mix well. Combine milk and egg in a small bowl. Add to flour mixture and stir quickly just to moisten it. Transfer batter to prepared pan. Bake 40 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let cool in pan 10 minutes. Turn loaf onto a wire rack to cool completely, or serve warm.
